MEXICO CITY

- most densely populated city in the world
- over 10,000 tonnes of solid-particule pollution is emitted into the environment every day
- 70,000 inhabitants die per year of pollution related illnesses, while 7 out of 10 newborns have blood lead levels higher than World Health Organisations norms.
- Mexico City's specific conditions, i.e., geological location, altitude, outdated technology and vast population, make it the most polluted city worldwide.

In July/August 1992 I travelled to Mexico City to create a visual record of the effects of air polution on the population, in support of research being carried out by students at the London University. The resulting work lead to an exhibition, which consisted of 22 b/w photographs shown as part of the annual Brighton Fesitval, and broadened the area of study to include an insight into the daily life and culture in Mexico City.
